As our countdown continues, Andrew Pulver admires Luca Guadagninos unnerving drama of longing and disloyalty that boasts remarkable performances

David Hockneys celebrated paint of the title doesnt actually appear in A Bigger Splash, but the same sense of sunbaked, febrile waterside sexuality permeates this beautifully atmospheric chamber drama from Italian director Luca Guadagnino. Its actually a remaking of a Jacques Deray film from 1969, La Piscine, with Alain Delon, Romy Schneider and Jane Birkin; in Guadagninos version, the emphasis is altered to make Schneiders character Marianne now reinvented as Tilda Swintons near-mute, Bowie-ish rocker the pivotal figure.
